Bad Joke

Image
Deep shit again. My cousin David is dying. The end of the road. He has been sick for 3 years now. And it’s the end today. We were raised like brothers. And he was a loyal friend. I know he couldn’t understand a bloody word written on this blog but he was always happy to hear good music, and he was the most happiest man on earth when I told him I was releasing my first record. He was an excellent drummer too, a loving husband, an amazing brother, and a proud son. And now, it’s just a question of weeks, days, hours, I don’t really fuckin’ know. So, hell yeah, it’s one of the weirdest day of my life. I don’t know when I’ll be back from Paris, but I hope you don’t mind if I take one or two weeks off . And sorry to write things like that on this tiny little internet music page, but I feel like I had to. Life’s a joke my friends. Today’s a bad one. He’s 33 years old. Tom Waits - Fawn

Scatman Patin and the Ram Rods !

Image
Scatman Patin was tenor saxophonist in the Riff Raffs, a Lafayette, LA group that played New Orleans-styled rock and R&B in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Several of the musicians in the group recorded as solo artists for the Ram label, including Patin, singer Bobby Page, singer/pianist Roy Perkins, and saxophonist Harry Simoneaux. Patin's sole Ram single was 1958's "Ginning"/"Red Beans & Rice," which were typical New Orleans rock instrumentals, with Patin taking a good squealing solo near the end of "Red Beans & Rice." For the release the group was renamed the Ram Rods, and the single billed to Scatman Patin and the Ram Rods. Jimmy 'Duck' Holmes !

Ok you all know how much we love blues music here. Not blues music for square people of course. We like Blues filled up with hard liquor, black cats, the devil himself, a mojo hand , and John the conquer root. So thanks to Jeff Konkel at Broke & Hungry Records. Why ? ‘Cos this is the man who runs Broke & Hungry Records , a St. Louis-based independent record label dedicated to recording and releasing authentic country blues. In a word, keeping the spirit alive. "Broke & Hungry Records ain’t polite and they ain’t pretty. They don’t get played at cocktail parties. Nobody takes ‘em home to meet his mother." Back to Bentonia represents both the debut CD for the 58-year-old Holmes and Broke & Hungry Records. Well, to be honest, listening to this set, it is hard to believe that Holmes has remained hidden for so long. The eleven sides here were cut in two sessions late last year. Eight acoustic sides were laid down at the Blue Front Café, 'on an unseasonably warm

I'm A Lover Not A Fighter !

People, good news ! My « official » website (I’m talkin’ about my phenomenal worlwide musician career here of course) is up and running. Right here Well, it’s absolutely not finished yet and still under construction, but at least we have a revtomfrost.com now ! Oh yeah, and we do have a forum ! And if you don’t mind, I’ll delete the other blog. To celebrate this, let’s talk about one my fav blues artists shall we... The last surviving member of the first generation swamp blues fraternity that includes Slim Harpo, Lightnin' Slim and Lonesome Sundown, Lazy Lester has always been one of the best. His entree into playing professionally arrived quite by accident: while riding on a bus sometime in the mid-'50s, he met guitarist Lightnin' Slim, who was searching fruitlessly for an AWOL harpist. The two's styles meshed seamlessly, and Lester became Slim's harpist of choice. In 1956, Lester stepped out front at J.D. Miller (the prolific south Louisiana producer)'s Crowl

The Lollipop Shoppe !

Image
I know, a lotta people from the rockin’ blogosphere (could we find another world godammit) already wrote and post about this fantastic band but hey, it’s my blog, I do what I want ^_^ Here we go ! The Lollipop Shoppe was originally known as The Weeds and featured Fred Cole, now of Dead Moon. After The Weeds signed to UNI Records (a now-defunct subsidiary of MCA), their new manager, "Lord" Tim Hudson, insisted they change their name to The Lollipop Shoppe to fit in with the current trend of bubblegum music. The band's actual recordings, including the 1968 LP Just Colour, are hardly bubblegum, but instead a mix of garage rock and psychedelia. The album and its single, "You Must Be a Witch," are regarded as period classics and still prized by collectors, though neither made the charts. The band opened for stars such as Janis Joplin and The Doors, and appeared in the biker movie Angels from Hell. The album has been bootlegged; the Music Maniac label has announced a

Al Hibbler !

Image
Born blind in Mississippi, Al Hibbler featured with Duke Ellington's Orchestra throughout the 1940s and recorded a few hits (included here) on his own for Decca and Atlantic during the 1950s and '60s. After winning a talent contest in Memphis, he joined Jay McShann and His Orchestra in 1942 and debuted with Duke Ellington's Orchestra just one year later, replacing Herb Jeffries. He spent a total of eight years with Ellington's band, finally leaving in 1951 after Ellington refused to raise his salary by $50 ! Mr Hibbler passed away in April 2001. Warren Storm !

Image
The first tales from the archives contest is a huge success ! See, we had a lotta thank you, one I love you and one wedding plan (JeanPop2 with Kenny). More soon… Warren Storm (Warren Schexnider) ,the Godfather of swamp pop, grew up in a Cajun household (he spoke only French until the third grade – me too btw ^_^). By age 15, Warren was playing drums with Larry Brasso's Rhythm-aires; then, after a stint with Herb Landry's R&B based Serenaders, Warren fell under the influence of Fats Domino's drummer Charlie "Hungry" Williams. Warren signed a contract with local impressario J.D. Miller and became a singer, too. His first record, released under the monkier Warren Storm (Schexnider was too long to fit on a 45 label, Warren declared), 1958's "The Prisoner's Song" b/w "Mama, Mama, Mama" sold a quarter of a million copies. Warren Storm - Mama Mama Mama (Look What Your Little Boy's Done) Warren Storm - Prisoner's Song
